With all the shopping, parties, and decorations that come with the holiday season, it is especially important to be safe while having fun with friends and family. Asides from having a monitored security system in your home, there are several other things you can do to ensure the protection of your home while you are traveling. Below are a few things you can do to ensure the protection of your home during the holidays.
Notify A Neighbor
If you are planning on traveling for the holidays or going out of town, make sure you inform or notify a trusted neighbor. You can ask your neighbor to look over your property and report any strange or suspicious activity.
Consider using background noise
You may also want to leave the TV or radio on low to make it appear as if someone is home. You can do this if you would not be traveling for long and if you do not have any trusted neighbors around. Even low and moderate noise in a house can deter trespassers who are scouting for a break-in.
Ensure all Windows are Closed
This is a common mistake that homeowners make when traveling. Open windows make it easy for trespassers to enter your home. Thus, make sure all windows are closed tight. This is particularly important if you have kids as they may not be security conscious.
Check your insurance documents
At the end of the day, it is best to prepare for the worst-case scenario. When uncertainty settles with regards to the protection of your home, it is always a good idea to ensure that your home and belongings are protected under insurance. This is particularly important if you would be traveling away longer than a week or two. Also, confirm if valuable items and gadgets would be covered under the insurance.
Avoid telling everyone you are on holiday
You don’t have to announce to everyone that you are traveling away from your home for the holidays. As a safety measure, since we really do not always know who is listening, don’t tell people outside your inner circle that you are traveling away or for how long you would be gone.
